Azerbaijan’s Ethnic Cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh and Genocidal Policy
Destruction and Disappearance of Armenian Cultural and Religious Heritage
In addition to the physical destruction of Armenian cultural and religious sites that are immovable, priceless movable cultural objects in the former museums in Artsakh like the Nikol Duman House- Museum, the Shushi Museum of Fine Arts, the Stepanakert Gallery of Art, and the Tigranakert Archaeological Museum are potentially forever lost.
These include the numerous monuments––large and small––left behind in the ethnically cleansed territory. Among the most painful losses is the oldest known khachkar, discovered in Vaghuhas, dating back to 866 CE.

Armenian Heritage Conference Opens in Bern with Urgent Call for Action
A major conference opened on May 27 in Bern, Switzerland, bringing together church leaders, civil society, and international advocates to address the destruction of Armenian religious and cultural heritage in Artsakh/Nagorno- Karabakh. Speakers, including His Holiness Karekin II and World Council of Churches leadership, condemned cultural erasure, described the situation as genocide, and called for international accountability and the right of return for displaced Armenians.
After nearly 2,000 years of Christian presence in the land, Nagorno Karabakh now lies empty following ethnic cleansing by Azerbaijani forces in September 2023. Amidst it all, perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Azerbaijan’s destruction of Nagorno Karabakh and its people is that Baku has suffered precisely zero consequences for it.

Azerbaijan’s Aggression will Soon Get Worse By Michael Rubin
For peace to triumph, it must be peace made between two democracies, not one democracy and one of the world’s most brutal dictatorships. There must first be a government in Azerbaijan that represents its people rather than exploits them. To ignore this reality is not to advance peace but to cost tens of thousands of lives and lose forever centuries-old cultural heritage at best, and make peace unattainable at worst. Rather than encourage endless talks, the best way for the United States and Europe to advance peace in the Caucasus will be to shed moral equivalence, sanction Aliyev, and prioritize democracy rather than coddle dictatorship.

An overwhelming majority (90%) of Armenians desire peace with Azerbaijan, but only half believe it will likely materialize, while 30% do not expect peace to be achieved. Security anxieties remain pervasive, with 70% considering another war likely.
Defying all expectations to the contrary, both houses of parliament went on to pass the motion. Switzerland is now committed to hosting a peace forum between representatives of Nagorno Karabakh and the aggressor, Azerbaijan, within one year. To ensure the momentum is not lost, a cross-party committee of 19 Swiss parliamentarians launched the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh on May 26. The stated aim is to “facilitate an open dialogue between Azerbaijan and representatives of the Nagorno-Karabakh Armenian people,” to negotiate the safe and collective return of the Armenian population.
